Our ultimate guide to celebrating Mothering Sunday in 2021!
I know that last year when we were on the brink of going into a national lockdown on Mother’s Day I definitely didn’t think we would be in a similar position almost a year later! There are big differences though and this year we are looking at a hopeful few months of restrictions beginning to ease!
I think we can all agree that mums everywhere deserve a bit of care after how tough the past 12 months have been! Home-schooling, entertaining everyone at home, juggling work, more home-schooling and all the other challenges this pandemic has brought! (Dads, we know you’ve done your bit too, but you get your day in June when we might actually be able to go OUT for the day!)
We have gathered together our favourite ideas from some of our lovely local businesses for food, gifts, experiences and craft ideas!
Who doesn’t love flowers? They always brighten my day and
we have some great florists in and around Ripon and Nidderdale. We are loving BUD Floral Designs and they are taking orders for Mother’s Day bouquets now!
Super bright, absolutely beautiful and really really local! BUD have also teamed up with the ever delicious Messy Buns to provide you with flowers and an afternoon tea (and Prosecco!) What a combo!
Speaking of cakes we also love the look of the Mother’s Day treats from Where the Ribbon Ends! They are based up at at Jervaulx Abbey Tearooms and these cakes are stunning! Just look at them! I didn’t know cakes could look so beautiful! Both the Mother’s Day Treat box or Mother’s Day Brownie box look amazing – have a look for yourselves here.
If you are looking for a real treat you could buy the mums in your life a voucher for afternoon tea at Grantley Hall! Although they are currently closed due to the pandemic a voucher is a great gift idea at the moment! We all need something to look forward to and what better way to celebrate restrictions easing than by getting dressed up and going somewhere as amazing as Grantley Hall for afternoon tea? You can buy vouchers for all of their restaurants on their website!
Studley Royal Garden Centre on Studley Road is a lovely place to pick up some Mother’s Day gifts. They have beautiful hanging baskets and flower troughs all planted up and ready to go!
Tate’s Garden Centre in Ripon is also open again and you can pick up all sorts of plants and gardens gifts there too. (Have you seen how many pots they have?) We love this idea we saw online – a plain terracotta plant pot, painted in chalk board paint for your own Mother’s Day messages!

We also love this Paper Mache seed heart idea from Busy Birds! Although it was for Valentine’s Day, we think it would be perfect for an easy-but-thoughtful Mother’s Day gift to plant together. You will need old newspaper, water, a blender, wild flower seeds, food colouring (optional) and some tin foil to make heart shaped moulds! Pop your newspaper and water into a blender once its mixed add the wild flowers seeds and food colouring – press into the heart shaped moulds and leave to dry!
Of course from 8th March you can have picnics outdoors (yay!) so why not pack up your afternoon tea or lunch and head for one of our lovely local places to visit? (Please stay local and follow the guidelines for wherever you go!) Last of all, save everyone the job of cooking and check out our updated list of local restaurants offering takeaway!
Of course we know that Mother’s day is special to lots of people, but it can also be a difficult time for some. Whether you are an experienced mum, new mum, soon-to-be mum, auntie, sister, step mum, mother-in-law, wishing to be a mum, missing your mum, a dad who is also mum – whatever your situation, you are amazing, be kind to yourself, take the day easily 💜
Happy Mother’s Day from Ripon & Nidderdale Mumbler!
